The recording of all information and data
Before any mine clearance operation can begin, the central command has to know and evaluate the full situation at the site. This process is often called ‘Technical survey’.
All relevant data around the clearance operation has to be gathered. Precise positions around the area are recorded using GPS (Global Positioning System - satellite supported latitude and longitude calculations). Records of any mine incidents are made and victims or witnesses interviewed. Eye witnesses to the mine-laying are located and their testimonials recorded. Photos are taken and maps are drafted. All this information is logged in a survey file.
When this information has been collected it can often be used to determine which areas are not mined. This prevents wasted effort and is often called Mined-Area-Reduction.

MgM has developed a special tool case, the Survey Kit, which can definitely raise the standard of mined area surveys and improve the performance of those carrying out surveys. All survey data collected is later given to the National data banks.
